The Rose & Crown Inn Lower Somercotes
Believed to be 17th century (but maybe older) it was a small wayside Inn or Tavern.
Parts of the original stone building still remain and they are incorporated within the present houses, also remaining are the original roof rafters which are virtually planed tree trunks.
Sometime in the early 1800s the original building was extended with brickwork to provide extra accomedation. Later in the 1800s a further large extension was added providing 10-15 rooms for the influx of travellers and workers. Bills, Jurnals and reciepts found in the loft surgest the Inn continued to prosper until it closed in 1910.
Today the Rose and Crown Inn is devided into four residential properties. Old washhouses and the shells of three “privys” toilets remain and are used for storage. The “privys” were shared by the Inns residents and were no more than a wooden bench with a hole over a brickbuilt ash pit.
Various articles found within the curtage of the Inn include Roman and Viking coins alond with early Portuguese gold coins. Also found were an early Private Post Box brass plaque and the remains of an early Christmas Card. Clay pipes produced locally, Pinxton and Langley pottery, a Saltglaze flask and glass bottles were amongst other articles found on the site.
