SOMERCOTES TOREADORS CARNIVAL BAND
During the 1930s Carnival Bands were very popular in Derbyshire and many villages formed their own bands specifically to raise money for charitable causes. Somercotes had the Somercotes Toreadors while other local Carnival Bands were Selston Hussars, Jacksdale and Ironville Trupals, South Normanton Masqueraders and Alfreton Messengers to name only a few.
Somercotes Toreadors Carnival Band was well known in the area and there are numerous references to their performances and parades in the local newspapers of 1935, 1936 and 1937 when they seem to have been in their hey-day. They represented Somercotes at many local galas and fetes where they were easily recognised in their distinctive black and white uniforms. They were especially well known for their torchlight formation marching. Two associations that benefitted greatly from their charitable work were local branches of The British Legion and the local Hospital Associations.
