The NHS Supply Chain headquarters opened in 1986. A report in the Observer newspaper published on the 17th July that year read in part; “NHS SUPPLIES HQ OPENS FOR BUSINESS – Alfreton’s £4m medical supplies complex makes its first deliveries last week. The plant, on Cotes Park West industrial estate is the largest NHS supplies distribution centre in the country. It is a 140,000 sq.ft. development on an 8 acre site…”
The NHS Supply Chain is an organisation that is currently run by DHL Supply Chain on behalf of the NHS Business Services Authority.
Its function is to provide a dedicated supply facility to the National Health Service. Prior to the 2006 outsourcing contract agreement with DHL, the organisations name was NHS Logistics Authority. The facility at Somercotes is the main warehouse and headquarters.
