Shops & Retail
Somercotes Local History Society members have been researching local shops and businesses, in Somercotes, Leabrooks and Pye Bridge from 1828 to 1941 (specifically the years 1828, 1849, 1857, 1876 1895, 1908, 1916, 1925, 1932 & 1941) by using Trade Directory and other records held at the Derbyshire Records Office.
The records have been catalogued into time lines through the specific years so that anyone visiting the site can look at the types of shops & businesses, the changes and how some have stood the test of time and remain today; e.g. Baileys Printers and Owen Taylor’s Butchers.
If you study the shops and businesses there may be some very interesting names or owners that may assist you in finding fathers, grand-fathers & great grand-fathers, their spouses or ladies who ran their own shops/businesses. It is hoped to expand the information in the next few months.
