Blacksmith's and Nail Makers in the Parish

Before the advent of the motor car the only way to travel any distance was by horse, and all goods were moved locally by horse and cart. The blacksmith was one of the most important trades for centuries. He made everything from horse shoes, to door hinges, gates, cooking utensils and nails. At one time there was hardly any aspect of life that the blacksmith did not touch.
It is not surprising, given the expansion of the villages, that blacksmiths plied their trade in the parish. The collieries and ironworks employed their own blacksmiths, but independent tradesmen also operated for the benefit of the wider population.
